Only a Moment
The smile took only a moment
sending intent
to a stranger
spreading laughter
A small gesture but so profound
that I am bound
to wait and see
what kind could be
The brief exchange left both of us
without a fuss
and left this space
a joyful place
. . .
Genuine poetry can communicate before it is understood.
—T.S. Elliot
I gave the Minute Poem a spin. This deceptively simple form took longer than a minute to write. Constrained by 60 syllables, one for each second in a minute, three stanzas, and a rhyme scheme of aabb-ccdd-eeff, I stuck with it until the last syllable and rhyme.
Revisions followed. Who would have guessed something so simple could be so complex? Writing poetry or prose requires perseverance and patient musing.
