Silence gives the mind a moment of peace, a chance to listen to nothing and everything. Leaving words hanging until a clearer thought breaks through.
Silence
Sitting between here and now
my mind crosses back
and forth
looking for answers
waiting as the silence
crowds out words.
Meditation requires keeping still and emptying the mind of words, or so I’m told. Neither one of those actions come easily to me. Words swirl in and out like bees searching for pollen among the roses.
My arms want to move, and I rock my head to the left, then to the right. Maybe I can focus my eyes on one thing and allow my mind to melt into the object.
The emptying never comes. Instead, questions that long for answers take up space. Until, I become the rose, small, pink, reaching silently to the sky. At last — no words.
Silence.
“To understand the immeasurable, the mind must be extraordinarily quiet, still.”
And always—
Be kind. Be brave. Be you.

Lord, I thought I was the only one who couldn’t bring my brain to a standstill and meditate. That said, I am awfully good – frighteningly good – at Yoga’s “Corpse Pose.” My spirit animal is the sloth. Just don’t ask me to turn off the thought faucet. The mere thought of it makes me feel panicky.
The Corpse Pose is one of my favorites as well. I follow Yoga with Adrienne on YouTube. She is gentle and reminds you to do what feels right for your body. I need that when she starts on more difficult balancing poses. My brain never wants to stop the commentary, but every once in a while, for a few fleeing moments, silence happens.
Thanks for stopping by and sharing.
Dearest friend Kathryn — thank you for being a positive influence! Wonderful reminders about the healthy benefits that come with intentional silence and pause in everyday moments. As I write this note to you I find it ironic that I am sharing these thoughts through the “silent” communication tool of typing it. This allows me to thoughtfully respond with heartfelt (and edited, if needed) words. I so enjoy your columns of topics that encourage uplifting reflection.
May you continue to have a blessed life and enjoy good health, good times with family and friends, and create more inspiring messages!
Love, always. Genie
